2009-2010 Weekend And Afterschool Classes

Art and science classes at Seven Directions Institute are offered September 8th through early June. All classes run weekly on a month to month payment schedule. Enrollment is ongoing.

Classes are available in drawing, painting, digital photography, animation and sculpture. KidStudio, our unique student led program, offers kids the chance to blend all the materials and tools at Seven Directions into one creative adventure. Additionally, Seven Directions offers thematic classes geared to teens, home school kids, and adults. Classes are available for kids 4 and older. Kids as young as 2 1/2 may enroll in Art Together, our parent child Class.

Selected Class

Sundays 11:30AM-1:30PM or
Tuesdays 3:30PM-5:30PM

A child-led studio experience. KidStudio is our monthly class and seasonal camp program where each child directs the course of their artwork. All materials are available in this playful environment. Expert instruction and mini-lessons in new concepts are provided.

Sundays 2PM-4PM

Art Together is a fun way for parents and kids to create with each other. Covering a wide range of projects and materials, instruction emphasizes shared experiences and playful exploration.

Mondays 4PM-6PM

Draw from life, explore a new dimension. The LiveDraw class is unique because students draw from live animals and 3D models of sports/action figures, mythical creatures, flowers, and many others. Students work with both traditional drawing media and cutting-edge digital tools, including tablet PCs and digital drawing tablets. Instruction covers the gamut of drawing skills and concepts.

Advanced HomeSchool
Tuesdays 1PM-3PM

A thematic program in all media. The HomeSchool Program offers art instruction which combines art history and studio art. THe projects range from clay and mixed-media sculpture to painting, drawing, and digital arts. Instruction is thematic and cooperative learning is emphasized. Kids often join the HomeSchool Program and remain for several years.
Animation Workshop

Wednesdays 4PM-6PM

Animation Workshop explores many art materials with the goal of finished moives.

In Animation Workshop learn a variety of animation techniques, primarily focusing on stop motion animation. Kids use top of the line tools in Santa Cruz's most creative studio environment. Working in small cooperative groups, kids create storyboards, sets, and shoot small stop motion movies.

Working individuall and/or in small cooperative groups, kids will create storyboards, sets, and shoot a small stop motion movie. Kids will use a wide variety of props and materials to convey their concept, allowing them to engage in traditional art making techniques alongside filming their animations. Using the schools 10 tablet computers, each group will work concurrently to develop and film their creation.

Wednesdays 1PM-3PM

An adventure in scientific discovery. EXPLORERS breathes life back into scientific study! Always hands-on, always fascinating, EXPLORERS delves into experimentation with wonder and awe. Students learn from a rotating schedule of life and physical sciences.

Digital Photo

Thursdays 4:00PM-6:00PM

Photograpy and Photoshop for Kids!
Digital art and photography is an introduction to the digital realm for kids 7 and older. Utilizing the school's digital arts center, kids will learn fundamentals of digital photography and incorporate their original photographs into artwork made on 12 tablet PC computers. Students will work in Painter X and Photoshop CS3. A unique experience unlike any other in Santa Cruz
